Universal Studios Hollywood announced the addition of two anime franchises to its upcoming Universal Fan Fest Nights event on Oct 5, 2024.

One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen will join previously announced experiences like Star Trek, Back to the Futureand Dungeons & Dragons.

Although Universal Studios didn’t provide much specifics on the attractions, they described them as follows:

One Piece: This experience is inspired by the long-running global hit anime series, which celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, and follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates crew on their epic quest to find “One Piece,” the legendary treasure of the former King of the Pirates, Gol D. Roger.

Jujutsu Kaisen: This experience is also inspired by the widely popular Japanese manga and its anime adaptation follows high school student Yuji Itadori after he accidently become the host of a powerful curse and joins Tokyo Jujutsu High School, an organization that fights the curses.

Koichi Oike, Chief Producer of the One Piece anime at Toei Animation, expressed his excitement, stating, “The first time we held the One Piece Premier Show at Universal Studios Japan was in 2007. Since then, we have been creating shows together with our guests. And now, after 18 years, One Piece is finally making its way overseas to Universal Studios Hollywood. I am so happy that American audiences will be able to experience the world of the One Piece anime. We will continue to produce the anime with even more power-up so that everyone in the world can enjoy it. Please continue to watch over us.”

Hiroaki Matsuya, Production Producer of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime at Toho, also commented on the expansion of the Jujutsu Kaisen attraction: “The Jujutsu Kaisen attraction, which was very well-received at Universal Studios Japan for over a year and was even extended, will finally be available at Universal Studios Hollywood. We have been receiving passionate messages from local fans about the work every day, so I am very happy to have this opportunity to allow more people to experience the world of the TV anime Jujutsu Kaisen. The sequel to the TV anime is also under active production, so please look forward to future developments.”

Universal Fan Fest Nights is a limited-time, after-hours experience set to run through select nights from April 25, 2025, to May 18, 2025.

The exact dates are as follows: April 25-27; May 2-4, 9-11, and 16-18.

The event will feature immersive, interactive attractions based on popular franchises, including anime, sci-fi, fantasy, gaming, and cosplay.

KADOKAWA announced the launch of the Wordless World Manga Contest a competition inviting manga artists from across the globe to submit works without speech bubbles or text.

Tohru Furuya, the long-time voice actor for Yamcha in the Dragon Ball series, has been replaced following a scandal that surfaced earlier this year.

According to an official statement from the Dragon Ball DAIMA website, Ryota Suzuki will take over the role of Yamcha, starting with the first episode of the new series, set to air on Oct 11, 2024.

Although the website didn’t specify the reason for Furuya’s replacement, it comes in the wake of a controversial interview published by Shukan Bunshun, a Japanese weekly magazine, that exposed his involvement in a long-term extramarital affair with a fan.

The scandal escalated further with allegations of assault and coerced abortion, both of which were revealed by the fan during the interview. According to the interview, the fan came forward to ensure Furuya would not harm others in the same way.

Furuya is being replaced not only as the voice of Yamcha but also in other notable roles, including Sabo in One Piece anime.

Dragon Ball Daima will be streamed on Crunchyroll in the United States, Canada, Latin America (including Brazil), Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, and Southeast Asia regions.

This marks the return of the Dragon Ball franchise to television for the first time in six years, following the conclusion of Dragon Ball Super in March 2018.

Notably, this is the first time in the history of the series that a Dragon Ball anime will air during a late-night slot.

Dragon Ball Daima is an original anime series with content penned by the late Akira Toriyama.

Toriyama had been deeply involved in the production, overseeing the story, character designs, and various other elements.

The anime is co-directed by Yoshitaka Yashima and Aya Komaki, with the series’ composition handled by Yuko Kakihara, and animation character designs by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru.

Takeru Hokazono, the creator of Kagurabachirevealed in a recent interview published in the November issue of Da Vinchi magazine that his decision to speed up the pacing of the manga was significantly influenced by two contemporary shonen juggernauts: Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man.

Reflecting on his creative process, Hokazono noted that reading these series changed his perspective on how fast narratives should unfold, prompting him to alter the structure of his own story.

Hokazono acknowledged that initially, he had reservations about accelerating the pace of Kagurabachi. However, after reading JJK and Chainsaw Manhe changed his views.

“While drawing, I thought it might be early, but when I read Jujutsu Kaisen, I thought, ‘Wow, that’s fast!’ and then when I read Chainsaw Man, I thought, ‘As expected, that’s fast!’ (laughs). I realized this is the recent sense of speed. One of the appeals of Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Kagurabachi is that I strive to keep readers engaged and actually speed things up more,” he said.

This approach led Hokazono to bring in the first main villain of the series, Genichi Sojo, much earlier than originally planned.

The manga’s breakneck speed is also evident in its early chapters, where Hokazono introduces several major plot elements within a short span of time.

By the seventh chapter, readers are already introduced to three out of the seven enchanted blades that exist within the Kagurabachi universe, including the prized weapon Shinuchi.

This sword, regarded as the masterpiece created by Chihiro’s dad Kunishige Rokuhira, was initially intended to appear much later in the series.

However, Hokazono opted to bring it into the story early to exceed reader expectations and maintain narrative momentum.

“Because I wanted to catch the readers’ interest, and I strongly felt the urge to introduce the masterpiece immediately,” Hokazono explained.

Hokazono revealed that he had stocked up on various ideas while he was preparing for the manga. And having a tighter pacing would ensure that the ideas he had won’t go to waste, and will instead be included in the manga.

“During the preparation period before starting the serialization, I stocked up on various ideas. If I hold back, they’ll just go stale, so I want to use them up and quickly empty my drawer,” he shared.

The influence of the two manga, especially Jujutsu Kaisenmight come across as concerning to some section of readers as the series has faced scrutiny over its pacing and direction towards the end.

Many fans expressed concerns that Jujutsu Kaisen had begun to focus too heavily on fight sequences, sacrificing the character interactions that had initially endeared the manga to its audience.

Interestingly, in the current interview, Hokazono mentioned that he intended create an action oriented story, which, combined with his comments about the pacing, might make it seem like Kagurabachi has too many similarities with JJK.

“I didn’t want to make it too entertaining; I wanted to create a story about people fighting each other,” Hokazono said.

But Hokazono has expressed his desire to study the previously popular works. And while he does want to carry forward some classic themes from these, he noted that young creators like him always thought of approaching their works innovatively, setting them apart from the works that preceded them.

Kagurabachi has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine since September 2023. The first tankobon volume was released on Feb 2, 2024.

The series’ third volume was published in July 2024, with Naruto author Masashi Kishimoto recommending Kagurabachi manga in the volume. The fourth volume released in October 2024.

Viz Media and Shueisha’s Manga Plus platform are publishing the series in English.

The manga also has its fair share of accolades – winning the Tsugi Manga (Next Manga 2024) award and being chosen as the best up-and-coming manga on Shueisha’s Manga Plus app by fans during Anime Expo 2024.

Manga leaks have long been a contentious issue within various fandoms, with Jujutsu Kaisen being one of the most notable victims.

Fans of the series, especially overseas ones, not only indulged in leaks but even celebrated those who distributed them online.

This behavior became so prevalent that animators and other creators called out the rampant sharing and discussion of leaked content on social media platforms.

However, the recent rise of fandoms taking a stand against leaks, particularly with Kagurabachihas caught the attention of the manga community.

Gachiakuta manga author, Kei Urana, acknowledged this growing movement to counter leaks, praising fans for their proactive approach.

“Glad to see someone is standing up to end the leaks!ﾉｼ I want you to see our originals, not bootlegs, leaks, but to pick them up and read them! txk,” she wrote on her Twitter account.

While Urana didn’t specifically mention any particular fandom, her comments come in the wake of a coordinated effort by Kagurabachi fans to discourage leakers from spreading spoilers and unofficial translations of the manga on social media.

The incident involved a leaker who claimed they would move on to Kagurabachi leaks once Jujutsu Kaisen concluded. The worst part about it was how they made it sound like they were doing the fandom a huge help/favor.

Kagurabachi fans quickly mobilized, calling on the leaker to refrain from such activities and reporting the account to official publishers, including VIZ Media.

The backlash was so intense that the leaker eventually backed down.

Urana has seen her own work too protected from spoilers and leaks. Despite Gachiakuta’s growing popularity, it hasn’t faced the same level of leak culture that other manga, such as Jujutsu Kaisenhave struggled with.

While there were early fan translation projects for Gachiakutathese gradually lost traction once Kodansha began simulreleasing the chapters in English through the K-Manga app.

Leaks in the manga industry are often driven by two primary factors: the absence of official translations and the fans’ eagerness to access the latest chapters before their official release.

In the case of Jujutsu Kaisenwhich was plagued by the latter, leaks were so widespread that even readers in Japan and staff members of the series expressed frustration over spoilers flooding social media platforms.

With the growing pushback against leaks in various fandoms, there is hope that more communities will follow suit, promoting official releases and discouraging the sharing of unauthorized content.

As for Gachiakutathe series has continued to gain momentum since its debut.

Set in a dystopian world, the story follows the story of Rudo, a young delinquent cast into a trash-filled abyss after being falsely accused of a crime. With unique visuals and compelling storytelling, the manga has attracted a dedicated fanbase.

Gachiakuta will be getting an anime adaptation in 2025 by Studio Bones.

Yusei Matsui’s Assassination Classroom manga has been temporarily removed from Horry County school libraries following a parent’s concerns about its content. The series is now under review, according to school officials.

The move comes after Jennifer Hannigan, a parent of a ninth grader at Socastee High School, raised objections upon discovering that her daughter had checked out the book from the school’s library.

Hannigan described the content as inappropriate for students, citing explicit scenes and violent imagery.

“I was shocked when I flipped through the pages,” Hannigan said. “Even if I didn’t have children, I wouldn’t want a child to read this book. There’s girls in lingerie hopping on top of men, pictures of guns, knives, and discussions about killing. It’s just too mature.”

Hannigan expressed concern over the graphic nature of the manga, claiming it contains depictions of violence, weapons, and other content she believes is inappropriate for its young audience. “They’re talking about different ways to kill the teacher, with guns, knives, and even potions,” she said.

Horry County Schools confirmed that the series is under a 30-day review, during which time it has been removed from circulation.

Hannigan urged other parents to be vigilant about the books their children are reading. “We’re exposing our kids to adult content far too soon,” she said. “We need to make sure what they’re reading aligns with our values.”

This incident follows a similar situation in Brevard County, Florida, where the school board recently banned another Japanese manga, Sasaki & Miyanociting concerns over its content, despite no state statute violations.

The decision came after a brief discussion at the board’s meeting on Aug 27, 2024, where the relationship depicted in the manga and its unconventional format were cited as reasons for its removal.

The final decision on whether Assassination Classroom will return to Horry County school libraries will be made following the completion of the review period.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the One Piece anime, a special episode titled ONE PIECE FAN LETTER will air on Oct 20 at 9:30 a.m. JST on Fuji TV.

This anniversary project is based on the short novel series One Piece novel Straw Hat Stories by Tomohito Ohsaki.

Set two years after the Summit War where Luffy lost his brother Ace, the story unfolds on the Sabaody Archipelago. A young girl who deeply admires Nami embarks on a small adventure. This is an ensemble drama that focuses on those who don’t “pursue” the One Piece, and depicts the Straw Hat Pirates’ reunion from their perspectives.

A PV and visual were revealed to commemorate the announcement.

The special is directed by Megumi Ishitani, who worked on episode 1015, which adapted the 1000th chapter of the manga, with Keisuke Mori serving as the character designer and animation director. The script is written by Momoka Toyoda, while Masahiro Tokuda composed an original score for the occasion.

The One Piece anime began airing on Oct. 20, 1999, nearly two years after the manga debuted. Since then, it has become one of the most iconic anime series in history establishing a legendary status for itself.

Since its premiere in Japan, 1120 episodes have been aired.

A remake of the anime by WIT Studio, titled THE ONE PIECEis currently under production. The staff members and first look of the anime was also revealed during the ONE PIECE DAY ’24 event.

However, the event has sparked widespread controversy, as Nobuhiro Watsuki, the series’ creator, was convicted for possession of child pornography in 2017.

Criticism has not only been directed at the participating manga creators but also at Shueisha.

Fans have called out Shueisha for continuing to promote Watsuki’s work, despite his criminal past. The fact that the publisher organized the celebratory event has further fueled outrage, with many seeing it as an implicit endorsement of Watsuki’s continued presence in the industry.

Social media has been flooded with disappointment, as many prominent manga creators are now being scrutinized for their involvement.

Fans are particularly troubled because some of the most influential figures in the manga industry are willing to overlook Watsuki’s history.

Despite arguments that some creators may have felt pressured to participate, many fans pointed out that several notable names, like Tite Kubo (Bleach) and Tatsuki Fujimoto (Chainsaw Man), were not a part of the list.

Ruroni Kenshin manga was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from April 1994 to September 1999. The complete series originally consisted of 28 tankobon volumes, and was later republished in 22 kanzenban volumes.

In 2017, Watsuki began publishing a direct sequel, Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arcin Jump Square.

Pony Canyon announced on Oct 1, 2024, that Aki Shimizu’s The Mononoke Lecture Logs of Chuzenji-sensei: He Just Solves All the Mysteries manga will be getting an anime adaptation set to release in 2025.

The manga is a spin-off and a prequel to Natsuhiko Kyogoku’s Hyakki Yako novel series.

The anime will be produced by 100studio, with Chihiro Kumano directing the project. Atsushi Oka will oversee the series composition and scriptwriting, while Masahiko Suzuki will design the characters.

A teaser visual has been released to commemorate the announcement.

I can’t believe that there’s going to be a Chuzenji-sensei anime! I’m so honored! I’m going to look forward to it as a viewer myself.

Natsuhiko Kyogoku:

A man who was born from the words that I wrote and was given a physical form through Aki Shimizu’s sorcery is now going to be moving and talking. He’s also apparently young. I can’t help but be shocked.

This story takes place before the exorcist Kyogokudo opened up a used bookstore…

Our setting is in Tokyo in 1948, just right after the war.
Kanna Kusakabe had just become a second-year at a high school when she meets the new language teacher, Akihiko Chuzenji.

Mysterious supernatural things keep happening around Kanna. Once again today, Kanna is going to open the doors to the library prep room to seek help from the surly Chuzenji-sensei who is waiting inside.

A high school supernatural mystery featuring the unlikely duo between a teacher and a high school girl is about to begin!

Aki Shimizu launched The Mononoke Lecture Logs Of Chuzenji-sensei: He Just Solves All The Mysteries manga in Kodansha’s shonen manga magazine Shonen Magazine Edge in October 2019. After the magazine’s discontinuation in October 2023, the series was transferred to Kodansha’s Comic Days website in December that same year.

Its chapters have been collected into nine tankobon volumes as of May 2024.
